to senators on both democrat and republican sides of the aisle, senator rob portman and sherrod brown about this ad. take a listen. >> i say it is the most disingenuous ad i've ever seen. they know better. they know the auto rescue worked. they know that ohio reasons connected directly or indirectly to the auto rescue and they know that governor romney and my opponent's opposition to the auto rescue, they're trying to crowd the issue and it is pretty outrageous. >> it is their game to the extent it is reported in the media and that's all they have said, there is reports this could happen. the bigger issue for me is what i talked about today who has the best policies to be sure we can continue to manufacture here in america. >> so we should also say that the gm actually weighed in very unusually on this romney ad with a spokesman calling it the worst kind of cynical campaign politics. there is some pushback from the industry about this very controversial ad. >> and, john, big picture here, the latest poll showing us the president has a little bit, a slight edge in ohio right now. but how muc

starting shortly after midnight to try to evacuate some people from their apartments, from their brown stones here, people who just thought they couldn't really stay in their homes too much longer. not life threatening situations necessarily, but at least some discomfort there and people just not wanting to be in the homes with the water like this. now, we have to say now that the water is receding. it is receding pretty drastically over the last hour. there is a stretch of dry street there behind me. that was not there an hour ago. a lot of cars completely -- not completely but submerged up to the tire range there. now some of the water receding. a lot of that is due to the efforts of gentlemen like this. this is a volunteer from the neighborhood here. he and a couple of other guys have come out here on the corners here, clearing out storm drains. and i think that's responsible for a lot of the water reseating. city workers doing what they can to siphon this out. this is a surge from the hudson river that came up from the storm drain, when the storm came, the water came into the drain

of the best paying jobs in the region. mining coal of course. steve brown is there live. steve, what has the epa done to deserve such a bad reputation in part of ohio? >> reporter: well the first thing we need to point out about eastern ohio it is a swinging type of area. it supported democrats and republican candidates. a lot of ticket splitters out there. it used to be home of a awful lot of manufacturing jobs. a lot of those have disappeared. for blue-collar folks some of the best jobs out there involving mining coal, working for a coal mine. the problem is, that the universal perception, both democrat-ic leaning and republican-leaning eastern ohioians, the epa has made those jobs more scarce. >> the epa is a dirty word out here? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: why is that? >> we've got oil and gas on its way in. we have coal mines. they say it is dirty coal. power plants are shutting down left and right. because of epa. yes, that's not a good word out here. >> reporter: the union, the united mine workers of america, which endorsed barack obama in 2008, put him on the cover of the union mag

. look at the flooding. you see the exact line where it was at its highest point. you can see that brown smudge line up there. and the consistency of the water is really bad. it's putrid. you can smell the fuel mixing in with sewage, debris, you've got the fuel. the only thing i can really equate that water to, people are actually walking through it believe it or not, to get to their places, it's just like that star wars scene, the trash compactor water where the monster comes up and looks around, that's exactly what it looks like. it's unreal. even getting here this morning was a pain in the neck. the national guard camein, which was great, but they had all kind of road closures still due to water. there's no power in the city. we're trying to weave in and out of the cities to get here safely. there are live wires down. even getting here from newark, usually you can see manhattan it's lit up beautiful, newark beautifully. newark is black. no lights on. southern tip of manhattan totally black as well and no cars on the road. it was absolutely really terrifying coming in here this morning
